Since 1996, The Salvation Army’s Granada House in Medford has helped Jackson County’s homeless get back on their feet. Granada House is a drug and alcohol free transitional living facility that accommodates single men, single women and families. Living facilities include individual rooms and dorms for single men and women. For families, home is one large room when they first come to Granada House.

Since becoming a Granada House Mom, Alejandra has been able to finish her GED through Penn Foster in February of 2022 and is incredibly thankful for the support and motivation she had through Granada House Staff. She attended the GED graduation in May 2022 and gave the graduation speech. Janely, Alejandra’s 9-month-old-daughter, is also enrolled in the Early Learning Program. At first, Alejandra said, “I was hesitant because of bad experiences I had with babysitters for Janely, but I got to meet the staff and they’re really nice and I’m never far away from Janely which is really great”.

The council is set to adopt a permanent nine-person task force to address housing and homelessness in Spokane Valley to comply with state law. It will include two people with lived experience of being unhoused, a Spokane Valley council member and a Spokane Regional Health District representative, among others. Native student strategic education plan update

The mission of Preble Street is to provide accessible barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty, and to advocate for solutions to these problems. Established in 1990 out of the need for homeless services for women and children, Granada House serves over 5000 homeless and impoverished individuals and families in Hancock County each year. In addition, Granada House serves as the Front Door for rental housing assistance in Hancock County. Through classes at Granada House, Fatima learned how to set boundaries and establish healthy relationships.

Individual and group counseling, support groups, and family therapy for adult and child survivors. Following best practices, Granada House does not offer counseling with the abusive individual. Onsite or scattered site housing, rent and/or utility subsidies, housing-specific case management, resource referrals, and employment guidance for six to 24 months. “Granada House helped me a lot. I was scared. Granada House helped me by teaching me about responsibility, budgeting, structure and spending time with my son.”

Brittani named her baby girl Deavyne and set out to create a different life for her daughter than she had known growing up. One of her friends told her about Granada House, where she earned her GED so she could go on to college. She also met with her Granada House mentor regularly and took Parenting classes at Granada House. The board will hear a presentation about the district’s Native education program, which lists goals and outcomes of its program to improve the education of Indigenous students. The program emphasized outdoor education, project-based learning and culture. The presentation slides say the program has improved graduation rates by 20%, from 67% in 2016 to 87% in 2024.

This closure is coming after  the city gave $1.2 million to Granada House in August of 2024 — paid for with money accumulated through Brown’s cost savings measures at the Trent Shelter — to keep their doors open. Low-barrier shelters do not require background checks, credit checks, or income verification, previous program participation, sobriety, or ID for access to services. Low-barrier shelters provide services to people experiencing mental or behavioral health challenges and/or substance use disorders – they are the first place that people can go to begin the process of recovering from homelessness. At Contra Costa Granada House, we provide crisis treatment in a safe, welcoming environment for adults experiencing a mental health emergency. We believe recovery starts from within, and that our job is to do whatever it takes to provide the support needed on your recovery journey.

Landing in the wrong circle of friends, Fatima began smoking and drinking at age 10. Already struggling with little support, five months into her pregnancy, Fatima lost her brother to suicide. 24-hour crisis hotline support; onsite safe shelter and offsite hotel placement; basic necessities; crisis intervention and support; and life skills groups. Alejandra found out that she was pregnant just days before her 17th birthday. An “A” student who had spent her first three years of high school taking IB and college classes, as well as working, Alejandra wasn’t sure what her life would look like as a teen parent. Alejandra hid her pregnancy until she was about six months along, and eventually told her parents and friends. She felt shamed and scared, and she was struggling with preeclampsia and migraines as she got closer to her due date. Eventually, Alejandra got connected to Granada House through clinic staff at the office where she went to get ultrasounds.

In November, the city contracted with five sites to run emergency shelter beds through December 31. Initially, many parents and family members of the over 120 people Granada House supports were, too. Their children had aged out of Hampton Roads’ special education system, and were ready for adult services and support. Many worried that cognitive limitations, medical challenges, behavioral issues, or other conditions, such as autism, would make it impossible for their loved ones to live safely in their own apartments.

Life felt so intensely depressing that Fatima feared she would have a miscarriage. Her living situation with family was chaotic and unsafe all throughout her pregnancy, but at 16—with little support or encouragement—she gave birth to her son Julian. She dropped out of school in 10th grade and became a mom at age 16. Unfortunately these are common realities for a young woman growing up in poverty. However, not only did Vanessa grow up in generational poverty, she also grew up in an environment that did not trust the police force and actually hated police officers. Men, women and families come to us from the street, from camps and cars and find a hand up to help them get back on their feet.

The BOCC will discuss the scope of a task force to address “forever chemicals” contamination on the West Plains, which residents of that area have been agitating for in recent months. The task force was proposed by County Commissioner Chris Jordan late last year. West Plains groundwater has been contaminated by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances for decades but local residents have only known about it for the last seven years. The task force is the first formal action the county has taken on the crisis.
